Explainer Video Software, Online Templates, and Useful Tips

Today, most people would rather watch videos than read text instructions – that’s why so many businesses and professional bloggers make explainer videos. It’s probably the best way to demonstrate a product or a service to prospects and customers and explain how to use it. There are many ways to create an explainer video: you can make a video with actors, record a screencast with a voiceover and/or titles, use 2D or 3D animation, even create a cartoon.

Simple or animated explainer videos can be uploaded to a YouTube channel, placed on a landing page, or embedded in an email.

Learn how to make a good explanatory video in the simple guide below!

1. Establish Your Goal

Try to define your goal at the very beginning. Think about what you want people to do after watching your explainer video: purchase your product, go to your website, sign up for your YouTube channel, whatever you need to happen. Make sure your video directs people to what you want them to do and gives them the right message.

2. Find Your Target Audience

After setting your goal, think about your audience. How old are they? Where do they live? What work do they do? You can try to create a multi-purpose video for all audiences but that can make it harder to achieve your goal.

3. Write a Script for Your Video

A good script is essential for any video. You can choose any scenario for your explainer video, but if you are a beginning video maker, we recommend you follow this logical progression:

  • Give a short overview of your product or service.
  • Briefly present the problem that the viewer can solve by using your product or service.
  • Demonstrate how to solve this problem with the help of your product or service – but don’t get into too much detail. Try to be as clear as possible.
  • At the end of the video, add a call to action that relates to your goals.

4. Don’t Make Your Video Too Long

Usually, a minute is enough to explain a simple concept. On YouTube, you can find both brief instructions and long tutorials – choose an appropriate length for your video depending on your topic, audience, and goals. Instagram videos are often quite short – under 60 seconds (note that ad videos are even shorter). Generally, people are looking for simple tools and quick solutions, so try to make your video as concise as possible.
